Ethan Grunkemeyer Reportedly Transferring from PSU, Landing Spots for Former 4-Star QB
After starting seven games for Penn State this season, redshirt freshman quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer is ready for a change.
ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Grunkemeyer is entering the transfer portal and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Some of Grunkmeyer's top landing spots could include Indiana, Cincinnati and Northwestern.
Grunkemeyer was ranked as a 4-star prospect and the No. 7 quarterback in the class of 2024 in 247Sports' composite. The Ohio native had received offers from Indiana, Cincinnati and Northwestern during his high school recruitment, so a return to the Midwest will likely be on the table for him.
The Hoosiers, in particular, will be looking for a new signal-caller after 2025 Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza leaves for the NFL. They also got an up-close look at Grunkemeyer when he threw for 219 yards, a touchdown and an interception in their Week 10 meeting.
The Nittany Lions turned to Grunkemeyer after losing senior quarterback Drew Allar to a season-ending ankle injury. Things started off rocky for the youngster with three straight losses, but he was eventually able to find a groove as he led Penn State to four straight wins to close out the year.
In all, Grunkemeyer completed 69.1 percent of his passes for 1,339 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions while also adding a rushing score.
Penn State is entering a new era under new head coach Matt Campbell, who was hired after coaching at Iowa State for the last 10 years. Campbell will now be tasked with finding a new starting quarterback for next season following Grunkemeyer's departure.
