Newly-hired Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham is finalizing his coaching staff ahead of Friday's transfer portal opening.

Whittingham is bringing in Utah offensive coordinator Jason Beck to lead his offense, he confirmed Thursday on ESPN's College GameDay.

BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill will meanwhile join Whittingham's staff as DC, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Whittingham spent 21 seasons as head coach at Utah before he was hired by Michigan on Dec. 26.

His first task as the Wolverines' head coach will be leading the program through the transfer portal, which will be open from Jan. 2 to Jan. 16.

Beck has previously worked with Virginia, Syracuse and New Mexico. He spent one year on Whittingham's staff at Utah, where he led the Utes to rank fourth in the FBS in total offense with more than 482 yards per game.

Whittingham said Thursday on GameDay Beck's hire would be "huge" for Michigan.

"He's a guy that's moved the football and scored points everywhere he's been, and it's going to be a big plus for us, having him there in Ann Arbor," Whittingham said.

He added there were "a bunch of the other guys that were on the staff at Utah are going to come with" Beck.

Whittingham will be bringing in at least one new face in Hill, who spent three seasons as defensive coordinator at BYU.

The Cougars ranked 109th in total defense during their first campaign under Hill before he helped the program improve to rank 13th in 2024 and 35th last season.

Hill has been "Whittingham's target since he took over at Michigan," per Thamel.

There will be no spring transfer portal this season, putting even more pressure on Whittingham and his new staff to bring in some big names over the next two weeks as Michigan looks to return to playoff contention.
