Dan Lanning Says CFP Format is 'Messed Up,' Believes Texas Tech Should Host Oregon

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning wants to see a change to the College Football Playoff format.

Ahead of the No. 5 Ducks' matchup against Texas Tech in the Orange Bowl, Lanning said the game should be hosted by the No. 4 Red Raiders instead of being played at a neutral site.

"The way we do playoffs in college football is messed up… in my opinion, this game should be played at Tech," Lanning told reporters. "There should be a home-field advantage for them."

The first round of the CFP is played at the higher seeds' home field, but the second round games and beyond are played at bowl sites. In the case of Oregon and Texas Tech, that means Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

While playing at a neutral location isn't exactly a disadvantage for Texas Tech, it certainly doesn't benefit it. While the Red Raiders and the other top four seeds get the advantage of a first-round bye, it also means they don't get the chance to play a game at home.

Lanning and Oregon know the feeling all too well. The Ducks went 13-0 during the 2024 season and earned the top overall seed, but they proceeded to lose by 20 points against Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

With Lanning and other coaches clearly upset about the current format of the Playoff, perhaps we could eventually see a change. For now, Texas Tech, Indiana, Georgia and Ohio State will have to manage without home-field advantage.

Oregon finished the regular season 12-1 and trounced James Madison 51-34 in the first round. While the Ducks had their way with their first-round opponent, things will get much more difficult against the Big 12 Champion Red Raiders.

Texas Tech, which went 12-1 this season, has had the chance to reset after the season thanks to the first-round bye. The Red Raiders have looked like one of the best teams in college football this year, but Oregon will be their biggest test to date.
