Latest News on Biff Poggi, Michigan HC Search Ahead of 2025 CFB Bowl Game vs. Texas

Joseph ZuckerDec 22, 2025

Interim head coach Biff Poggi confirmed Monday the school has interviewed him multiple times as part of its coaching search.

"I know what the hell I'm doing," he told reporters while making a public pitch. "Before I smoke myself to death with cigars, I want to fix it."

Michigan appointed Poggi after dismissing Sherrone Moore earlier this month. The 66-year-old figures to be a long shot for the permanent role. He has been an FBS head coach just once before and compiled a 6-16 record between the 2023 and 2024 seasons at Charlotte.

The trouble for the Wolverines is that they fired Moore relatively late into the coaching cycle, and the most obvious candidates to target have either accepted new jobs or reaffirmed their commitment to their current programs.

Kenny Dillingham is the most recent example, penning a new five-year contract at Arizona State that gives him a sizable raise.

Louisville's Jeff Brohm has gained some steam in the search recently, though he already spurned Penn State in favor of staying at his alma mater.

Poggi said during Monday's press conference that Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel is aiming to have a new head coach ahead of the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31.

If nothing else, that ensures an expedient conclusion. Whether the Wolverines pick a candidate that rallies the fanbase is another matter.
