Ashton Daniels Enters Transfer Portal, What Are Top Landing Spots for Auburn QB?
Auburn quarterback Ashton Daniels is entering the transfer portal.
He said in a social media post that "things didn't work out how I thought they would" and ruled out a return to the program:
Daniels, who signed with the Tigers after spending three years at Stanford, threw for 797 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in four appearances. He's the second Auburn QB to enter the portal with Jackson Arnold reportedly exploring his options as well.
Daniels wasn't prolific at Stanford. He had 3,986 passing yards and 21 touchdowns to 20 interceptions across 33 appearances. His overall experience could put him on the radar for schools looking for a stopgap solution under center.
Georgia Tech would fit the bill with Haynes King departing, and Daniels is a native of the Peach State.
The fourth-year QB could opt for the Group of Five route, where he's likely to have a clearer path to a starting role.
Tulane has to replace its starting quarterback, Jake Retzlaff, after reaching the College Football Playoff, and Alonza Barnett III could look to parlay James Madison's CFP run into a bigger showcase in 2026. The odds are probably remote, but South Florida and Auburn could effectively trade QBs since Daniels' exit only makes it more likely Byrum Brown is following head coach Alex Golesh to the Tigers.
In general, it's tough to get a good idea of where Daniels will land because the transfer portal already has some notable QBs.
DJ Lagway and Dylan Raiola were highly touted recruits coming out of high school. Brendan Sorsby, Rocco Becht and Josh Hoover have been productive starters at the FBS level. Players on teams in the CFP will eventually throw their names into the portal as well.
Based on his statement, the new coaching staff didn't see a role for Daniels in the offense next year. At least he can find a better opportunity elsewhere.
