Michigan OC Chip Lindsey Reportedly Joins Missouri, Who Will Call Plays vs. Texas?
With Michigan's coaching situation in flux, it will reportedly have to replace offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey heading into the 2026 season as well.
ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Sunday that Lindsey is leaving the Wolverines to take the same position at Missouri on a three-year deal.
Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reported Michigan will have a new play-caller for the upcoming Cheez-It Citrus Bowl matchup with Texas:
This comes Zenitz reported Saturday that Lindsey was "a leading candidate" for the position with the Tigers.
Missouri's hire means the Wolverines will need to replace another coaching position, although one that is less prominent than head coach. They fired Sherrone Moore earlier this month in a high-profile move that came after just two seasons at the helm.
"Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member," the school said in a statement. "This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy."
As for Lindsey, the 2025 campaign was just his first with the Big Ten program after he held a variety of roles, including offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Auburn, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UCF, and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at North Carolina.
He coached Drake Maye during his time with the Tar Heels before the New England Patriots selected the quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft.
Lindsey also has head coaching experience from when he led Troy for three seasons from 2019 to 2021.
The Trojans went 15-19 during his tenure and failed to make a single bowl game.
As for Michigan, it averaged a solid-but-unspectacular 27.6 points per game during Lindsey's one season. Offense was a major concern during its three losses, as it managed to score 13 points against Oklahoma and 13 points against USC before failing to find the end zone during a 27-9 loss to rival Ohio State.
Highly regarded freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood didn't fully live up to expectations in his first season and finished with just nine touchdown passes to six interceptions.
Perhaps a change of scenery at Missouri will help Lindsey find more success with his offense than the Wolverines enjoyed in 2025.
