Alabama Thrills Fans with Comeback Win vs. OU in CFP Bracket to Clinch Rose Bowl Berth
No. 9 Alabama wrapped up a 34-24 win over No. 8 Oklahoma in their first-round College Football Playoff matchup on Friday night.
The Crimson Tide faced an early 17-0 deficit, but scored 27 consecutive points before holding on for the victory.
Alabama will now face No. 1 Indiana in the Rose Bowl, as fans were impressed with the team's performance.
The Sooners controlled the field position battle early despite punting on their opening drive of the game, taking a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Oklahoma pushed its advantage to 17-0 with a seven-yard touchdown pass from John Mateer to Isaiah Satenga III, but Alabama eventually found some consistency offensively.
The Crimson Tide cut the deficit to 17-10 before Mateer threw an interception that was returned for a game-tying touchdown near the end of the first half.
Both teams traded punts to start the third quarter, but Alabama took its first lead of the game after Ty Simpson found Lotzeir Brooks for a 30-yard score.
Another field goal gave the Crimson Tide a 10-point lead before Mateer found Deion Burks for a 37-yard touchdown on the second play of the fourth quarter that kept the Sooners within striking distance.
Alabama eventually gained a double-digit edge once again after Daniel Hill picked up a six-yard rushing touchdown.
Oklahoma was able to move down the field, but kicker Tate Sandell missed a pair of field goals that extinguished any comeback hopes.
Mateer finished 26-of-41 for 307 yards and two touchdowns to go along with the interception. He also picked up a third score on the ground.
For the Crimson Tide, Simpson completed 62.1 percent of his throws for 232 yards and a pair of touchdowns without getting picked off.
Alabama's win was especially impressive considering head coach Kalen DeBoer's offense struggled to move the chains, converting just two of 12 opportunities on third down.
Still, the Crimson Tide were able to complete an admirable turnaround and take down their SEC foe.
They'll now face the Hoosiers in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 at 4 p.m. ET.
