NBA Rumors on Timeline for Mavs to Name New GM After Nico Harrison Exit
The Dallas Mavericks aren't expected to name the full-time replacement for former general manager Nico Harrison ahead of the 2025-26 trade deadline, according to Christian Clark of The Athletic.
"As the Feb. 5 trade deadline draws closer, it is viewed as a near-certainty that co-interim general managers Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi will remain in place for most — or all — of this season," Clark reported Friday. "The Mavericks, league sources said, are comfortable with that pairing in charge through the trade deadline. The Mavs will likely wait until this spring to move forward with their GM search and select from the widest possible pool of candidates."
Dallas fired Harrison on Nov. 11 after the team opened the year with a 3-8 record.
The Mavericks' slow start was especially disappointing considering they shockingly traded superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick on Feb. 2.
Dallas appears to be content with pushing back the hiring process for a new general manager before the offseason begins, navigating through the trade deadline with its current front office in place.
The Mavericks still sit at 11-17, but they're just 2.5 games back from the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference standings and are reportedly considering upgrading their roster around standout rookie Cooper Flagg.
While Finley and Riccardi will obviously have input on Dallas' decision-making, NBA insider Marc Stein previously noted that team governor Patrick Dumont has the deciding vote in front office decisions.
The trade deadline is on Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. ET.
