Drew Mestemaker to Reportedly Transfer, Top Landing Spots for CFB's Leading Passer
The nation's leading passer is entering the transfer portal.
Per On3's Pete Nakos, North Texas Drew Mestemaker is expected to enter the transfer portal. The redshirt freshman logged 4,129 yards, 31 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season.
Mestemaker did not have a rating coming out of high school, per 247Sports' composite rankings, and he ended up walking on to North Texas' roster ahead of the 2024 season. After earning the starting nod this season, he quickly established himself as one of the best walk-ons in the country.
Now, Mestemaker will find a new squad after winning the Burlsworth Trophy with the Mean Green.
Being from Austin, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Mestemaker stay in Texas, but which school is right for him is a big question mark. Both Texas and Texas A&M have solid quarterbacks with eligibility remaining. Arch Manning has already confirmed that he will return to Texas for his junior season, but it's still unclear what A&M's Marcel Reed plans to do.
While the Longhorns and Aggies may be set in their quarterback rooms, there is another Texas school that will be looking for a quarterback this offseason. Texas Tech, which is gearing up for its first College Football Playoff run, has been known to have deep pockets in the NIL space, and the Red Raiders could lure Mestemaker to Lubbock to replace senior Behren Morton.
Some other notable teams that will likely be in the market for a quarterback include Miami, LSU, Indiana and Tennessee, and it wouldn't be surprising to see all four of those squads try to get Mestemaker to their schools.
Wherever he ends up, it's fair to assume Mestemaker is eyeing a jump to the Power 4 level, and he'll garner plenty of interest.
