DJ Lagway to Transfer, Lane Kiffin Retweets Post as Florida QB Eyes New Landing Spot
Florida quarterback DJ Lagway announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Monday.
ESPN's Pete Thamel first reported on Lagway's future.
The news caught the eye of LSU head coach Lane Kiffin:
Lagway threw for 4,179 yards, 28 touchdowns and 23 interceptions in 24 appearances with the Gators. He also went for 237 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
The 6'3" signal-caller was a 5-star recruit and ranked seventh nationally in 247Sports' composite rankings for 2024. His signing was considered a coup for Florida, which needed a shot in the arm after winning just 11 games across Billy Napier's first two years.
The Gators were unable to improve their fortunes to a meaningful degree, and Napier was shown the door seven games into this season.
Players who enter the portal can ultimately decide to stay at their current schools. The tone of Lagway's statement indicates he doesn't intend on sticking around in Gainesville to play under new coach Jon Sumrall.
According to Thamel, he's "seeking a fresh start to harness his talent, much in the way quarterbacks like Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels reshaped their careers after transferring from their original schools."
Because of his recruiting profile, Lagway is likely to get a lot of interest from schools in need of immediate help at quarterback.
Indiana is an obvious choice thanks to how much success Fernando Mendoza has had in Bloomington. He parlayed his one year with the Hoosiers into the Heisman Trophy and could be the first quarterback off the board in the 2026 NFL draft.
Alabama, Oregon, Clemson, Miami, LSU and Penn State could all see their starters move on to the pros as well.
According to Pete Nakos of On3, LSU, Miami and Baylor are three teams to watch.
From Lagway's perspective, the Ducks might be the most attractive landing spot in that group thanks to the development Nix and Dante Moore made under coach Dan Lanning.
Kiffin, meanwhile, has attacked the transfer portal like few other coaches. Poaching Lagway from an SEC rival would be a great way to kick off his tenure in Baton Rouge.
In general, Lagway didn't meet his lofty expectations at Florida. With a change of scenery, he might be able to make significant strides in his game.
