Matchup Prediction
The winners of the quarterfinals involving Indiana and Texas Tech are slated to meet in the Peach Bowl.
Indiana will play the winner of the Alabama Crimson Tide-Oklahoma Sooners matchup in the final eight. Texas Tech takes on either the Oregon Ducks or James Madison Dukes.
The Hoosiers and Red Raiders hold a defensive advantage over either potential quarterfinal foe. They ranked second and third in scoring defense.
Texas Tech allowed the fifth-fewest total yards per game, while Indiana was sixth in that category.
Indiana's defense performed better over its final six games. It allowed over 10 points once during that span, including a 10-point concession to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Big Ten Championship Game.
Fernando Mendoza deservedly receives a lot of the national attention brought on Indiana, but the defense is equally as important to the success in Curt Cignetti's second season.
Texas Tech's defense received more notoriety than its offense, as evidenced by linebacker Jacob Rodriguez finishing fifth in Heisman voting.
The Red Raiders arguably have the best front seven in the FBS. Those players helped Texas Tech hold five of its last six opponents to single-digit point totals.
A similar fate could await Oregon or James Madison in the Orange Bowl, which is why it makes it easy to predict a battle between the Red Raiders and Indiana in Atlanta.
Matchup Prediction: No. 1 Indiana vs. No. 4 Texas Tech
