Joe Burrow's Viral Comments on Bengals Future Reportedly Drew Attention of NFL Teams

Mike ChiariDec 11, 2025

NFL teams reportedly took notice of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow's comments this week regarding the recent hardships he has endured through injuries and on-field struggles.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Burrow said, "Do I have fun playing? I mean, how much? Winning's always fun, but in general, was it as fun as before? No, I wouldn't say it was that way."

ESPN's Adam Schefter addressed the situation, saying, "I can tell you this, other teams in the league took notice of that. I can tell you that for a fact. I know that because I was texting with some of them."

Regarding playing in the NFL, Burrow said, "I have to have fun doing it," before adding, "If it's not fun, then what am I doing it for?"

Burrow was asked if there was a "changing point" that made football less enjoyable than it was previously, to which he responded, "Reflection—reflection on a lot of things that I've done and been through in my career, I think. And I've been through more than most. Certainly not easy on the brain or body, so just trying to have fun doing it again."

The superstar signal-caller went on to divulge that "there's just a lot of things going on right now," related to both football and his personal life.

Burrow, 29, is in the midst of his sixth NFL season, all of which have been spent with the Bengals.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft has had his fair share of great moments over the years, including leading the Bengals to a Super Bowl berth in 2021 and setting career highs last season with 4,918 passing yards and 43 passing touchdowns, both of which led the league.

However, he has missed significant time due to injuries in two of the past three seasons, including this season, as he sat out nine games with a toe injury.

The Bengals went just 1-8 during his absence, but they won his first game back against the Baltimore Ravens on Thanksgiving, keeping their slim playoff hopes alive.

However, Cincinnati blew a 10-point, fourth-quarter lead in a 39-34 loss to the Buffalo Bills last weekend, and the biggest momentum shifter was a pick six thrown by Burrow to Bills cornerback Christian Benford, which gave Buffalo the lead with 5:25 left.

Burrow threw another interception on the next drive as well, which led to a Bills insurance touchdown that the Bengals were unable to overcome.

At 4-9, the Bengals are likely in line to miss the postseason for a third consecutive year despite having a stacked offense led by Burrow and wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

By paying big money to Burrow, Chase and Higgins, the Bengals front office has neglected the defense and offensive line to a large degree.

Cincy is last in the league in scoring defense with 31.8 points allowed per game, and Burrow has been sacked seven times in four games this season after taking 48 sacks last season.

It is unclear if Burrow was hinting at anything regarding his future with Wednesday's comments, but given the Bengals' overall lack of success over the past few years, it isn't surprising that other teams may be reading into Burrow's remarks.

Since Burrow is under contract through 2029, it is difficult to envision the Bengals even considering a trade unless he forces the issue, but Schefter's report suggests teams may be ready in case an opportunity to acquire Burrow arises.
