CFB Insider Expects Change of CFP Weekly Rankings to Be Discussed amid Notre Dame Snub
Notre Dame was ahead of Miami in every iteration of the College Football Playoff rankings this season until the Hurricanes jumped them in shocking fashion in the final one that determined the 12-team field despite both teams being idle.
Such a stunning change from one poll to the next might not be something that happens in the future.
Ralph D. Russo of The Athletic reported Monday that he expects there to be future discussions regarding whether there will be a weekly rankings show in coming seasons. With the current system in place, the selection committee releases the rankings on a televised show every Tuesday.
It creates plenty of content and debate, but it also puts the committee into a position where it has to explain its weekly rankings. That can sometimes lead to inconsistency in logic, such as when every single conference title game loser drops in the rankings except for the SEC's Alabama, securing the Crimson Tide a controversial spot in the field.
Had the committee not released previous sets of rankings, it wouldn't have been as surprising to see Notre Dame left out of the field behind the Miami team it was previously ahead of and an Alabama team that struggled down the stretch of the campaign.
In fact, there likely wouldn't have been that much debate at all when it came to directly comparing the Fighting Irish and Hurricanes if there was just one bracket at the end of the season, considering they each finished 10-2 and Miami won their head-to-head matchup.
It was Notre Dame's place ahead of them until the final rankings when both teams were sitting at home during conference championship weekend that made the entire thing so noteworthy.
Instead, the committee jumped through some logical hoops from one week to the next, and the head-to-head result seemed to take precedence only when BYU dropped following its loss to Texas Tech to create a situation where Notre Dame and Miami were right next to each other in the rankings.
The end result was the Hurricanes celebrating their inclusion and the Fighting Irish announcing they are not going to participate in a bowl game.
The arguments will still be there in future years, but there just might be less drama next time around if the weekly rankings show is removed.
