How Did Michigan State Land Historic $401M Donation for its Athletics Department?

Paul KasabianDec 6, 2025

Michigan State announced that Acrisure co-founder, chairman and CEO of Greg Williams and his wife, Dawn Williams, have committed to donating $401 million toward Spartan athletics.

A total of $290 million will go toward MSU sports via FOR SPARTA: The Capital Initiative for MSU Athletics. A Dec. 2 MSU press release announced that $1 billion initiative, which is "designed to elevate facilities, enhance the student-athlete experience and secure Michigan State's position as a leader in college athletics."

A $100 million sum will head toward Spartan Ventures, "the revenue, innovation and development arm of MSU Athletics," per Croix Green of State News.

"The investment is intended to strengthen partnerships, build new revenue streams and modernize how the university supports its athletic programs amid a rapidly shifting college sports landscape," Green wrote.

The final $11 million is being used for "academics and extracurricular initiatives," per MSU. That will include the "MSU Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the Risk Management and Financial Insurance Program in the Eli Broad College of Business, the Spartan Marching Band and Pep Bands, and the Sparty Mascot Program."

Williams founded Acrisure, a global financial technology company, in 2005. The company has $5 billion in annual revenue.

Williams is not an MSU alum, but his roots to the Spartans date back to the early-1970s, when his English teacher took the then-seventh grader and other students to watch the men's basketball team, per Tony Paul of The Detroit News. Williams grew up in suburban Lansing, Michigan. Soon after he became a fan, Williams saw his Spartans, led by basketball icon Magic Johnson, beat Larry Bird and Indiana State in a legendary 1979 national championship showdown.

Also, per Green, Dawn Williams' "ties to the university have shaped much of their philanthropic focus."

Obviously, this is big news for Michigan State, which also just made waves by adding Pat Fitzgerald to be their new football head coach. Fitzgerald previously enjoyed much success at Northwestern, leading the team to five Top 25 finishes in 17 seasons.
