Nick Saban Discusses Advice He Gave Lane Kiffin Ahead of LSU Move in Video
Before Lane Kiffin made the move to LSU, he solicited advice from his former boss, Nick Saban, about what he should do.
On Saturday's episode of College Gameday, Saban explained that he doesn't tell anyone what they should do, but one thing he asks any coach who seeks input from him is, "What do you want to do?"
Saban went on to say he felt like Kiffin was "very confused" about whether or not to stay in Mississippi or make the jump to LSU.
"You owe it to yourself and your family to at least look at other opportunities and consider them, and see if they think it's a better situation for you in the future," said Saban. "Based on the way the (college football) calendar is, that never fits together correctly."
Kiffin worked with Saban for three seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama from 2014 to '16. He responded to Saban's remarks on Saturday:
There were reports that Ole Miss gave Kiffin an ultimatum to decide his future before the team's game against Mississippi State on Nov. 28. He denied there was any such demand.
After the Rebels beat Mississippi State, Kiffin told reporters he was still undecided on his future and would announce a decision the next day. He took a little extra time before revealing on Dec. 1 he was taking the LSU job.
Kiffin leaves Ole Miss after an incredibly successful six season run. He went 55-19 overall, third-most wins by a head coach in school history. The program has won at least 10 games in each of the past three seasons, including an 11-1 record in 2025.
