Alabama vs. Georgia Preview and Prediction

In their first match-up back on September 27 in Athens, the Bulldogs found themselves in a double-digit hole against Alabama. Their inability to stop the Crimson Tide offense made it impossible for them to catch up, and junior quarterback Ty Simpson completed 24-of-38 passes for 276 yards, two touchdowns, and a passer rating of 141.5.

Georgia's defense was oddly inept in that first game, outplayed and pushed around the field by Alabama's offense, and that must change if the Bulldogs want to beat their conference rival for the first time in a championship showdown.

The team's defense has steadily improved since that game, but the key to a victory Saturday will be its ability to pressure Simpson and not allow him to get into the rhythm that he enjoyed in their early-season match-up. If he has time to sit back, survey the field, and easily complete passes as he did in September to keep drives alive and wear the Bulldogs' defense down, the Crimson Tide will extend its win-loss record against Kirby Smart-coached teams to 8-1.

How Gunnar Stockton, the Georgia quarterback, recovers from a subpar performance against Georgia Tech on November 28, in which he completed just 11-of-21 passes for 70 yards, a touchdown, and an interceptions will also have an impact on the home team's ability to capture its conference title and compete for a national title.

Alabama is not without its own issues.

The Crimson Tide has struggled to stop the run on defense, giving up 124.3 yards per game, an average of 3.9 per attempt, and 13 touchdowns, per StatMuse. It is an area that the Bulldogs' offense can take advantage of.

Running back Nate Frazier has rushed for 809 yards, on 145 carries, and five touchdowns. Chauncey Bowens has 493 yards and six touchdowns. Quarterback Stockton has been a presence in the run game, too, accumulating 403 yards and eight touchdowns of his own.

If the Bulldogs can control the pace of the game, exploit the Alabama rush defense, and score early, they can not only avoid putting themselves in a two-score hole, but dictate the entire game.

Georgia's sole victory against Alabama in their last 11 games was the 2022 national title game. While it was a big win on the grandest stage in college football, it was also three years ago. That is a long enough wait for the Bulldogs' fans and changes this weekend.

Prediction: Georgia outlasts Alabama, winning the SEC title and a trip to the playoffs, by three
