Kevin De Bruyne Tops Arjen Robben to Be Named 2014-15 Germany Player of the Year
Wolfsburg's Kevin De Bruyne capped off an excellent season by being named Kicker's Player of the Year in a landslide victory over Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben and Manuel Neuer on Sunday.
Peter McVitie of Goal provided more information:
"There was no contest for Kicker's Player of the Year award, which is voted for by journalists all over the country, as De Bruyne received 367 votes, while Robben clocked 94 and Neuer picked up 67.
'To be voted best player in a country abroad means a lot,' De Bruyne told Kicker after hearing the news. 'This is the reward for my season.'
"
De Bruyne was phenomenal in 2014-15, appearing in 34 league contests and scoring 10 goals and adding a whopping 20 assists as Wolfsburg finished second in the Bundesliga and won the DFB-Pokal. The attacking midfielder finished the season with an average match rating of 7.95, according to WhoScored.com, an excellent mark that was second in the Bundesliga, trailing only Robben's 8.47 mark.
Now, the Belgian is sure to be one of the hottest commodities on the transfer market, with Manchester City reportedly keen on adding the player, per the Manchester Evening News. However, manager Dieter Hecking has denied any bids have been made for the player, per PA Sport (h/t ESPN FC). Just 24, the Belgium international would help most teams in Europe with his playmaking ability and goalscoring capabilities.
