Examining College Football Recruiting Rankings After 2025 Early National Signing Day

Kristopher KnoxDec 3, 2025

The early national signing period for the 2026 NCAA football class opened on Wednesday, and there's been no shortage of activity already. Many of the nation's top recruits have been committed for months, but there have been plenty of shake-ups over the past few days.

Earlier this week, for example, Vanderbilt flipped Nashville Christian quarterback Jared Curtis—the fifth-ranked recruit in ESPN's rankings—away from Georgia.

This cycle's early signing period will run through Friday, but we've already seen the sort of drama that could significantly alter the top recruiting classes.

Here, you'll find a look at what has transpired and an updated look at the class rankings after Day 1.

Day 1 Recap

Ohio State v Michigan
Brian Hartline

For fans who love recruiting drama, Day 1 of the early signing period did not disappoint. There were some expected developments. Quarterback Keisean Henderson, for example, has long been committed to Houston and officially signed with the program on Wednesday.

Henderson, a dual-threat prospect out of Spring, Texas, is the top-rated quarterback on ESPN's board.

There were announcements, too. Douglas County High School edge-rusher Jordan Carter and Orange Lutheran offensive tackle Sam Utu were the only uncommitted recruits on ESPN's top 100 rankings entering Wednesday.

Utu committed to SMU, as many expected. Carter, who recently decommitted from Texas A&M, chose Tennessee over Georgia Tech and Auburn.

Wednesday wasn't short on surprises either, with many of them related to recent coaching changes. Defensive tackle Lamar Brown, the top-ranked recruit on ESPN's board, is committed to LSU but will not sign this week, according to Sam Spiegelman of Rivals.

LSU, of course, just hired head coach Lane Kiffin away from Mississippi.

News also broke early on Wednesday that Ohio State offensive coordinator and receivers coach Brian Hartline would be leaving to become the head coach at South Florida.

Hartline's departure could end up costing the Buckeyes multiple top-ranked receiver recruits. Chris Henry Jr., ESPN's seventh-ranked prospect and Ohio State's top-ranked commit, will continue weighing his options.

The Buckeyes already lost 4-star receiver Kayden Dixon-Wyatt when he flipped to USC early on Wednesday.

While Ohio State's status as both the defending champ and the No. 1-ranked team in the country should appeal to many recruits, it's clear that Hartline's ability to develop receivers was a big draw.

The Buckeyes weren't the only ones to lose a highly-ranked recruit on Wednesday, either. 4-star defensive lineman Corey Wells flipped from Texas to Auburn—possibly after the Tigers hired away Hartline's predecessor, Alex Golesh, away from South Florida.

For now, the Buckeyes and Longhorns still boast top-10 recruiting classes, though Wednesday's developments undoubtedly sting.
