No. 25 Arkansas defeats No. 6 Louisville, 89-80
After losing to Michigan State and Duke, Arkansas has its first marquee victory of the season.
The Razorbacks defended home-court advantage and defeated Louisville 89-80 in a showdown between nationally ranked teams. Arkansas jumped out to a commanding 18-point halftime lead and then survived a Louisville push to earn the win.
Trevon Brazile spearheaded the scoring effort with 21 points, while Darius Acuff Jr. notched a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Malique Ewin, Meleek Thomas and Billy Richmond III also combined for 39 points off the bench.
As for Louisville, it is no longer undefeated after losing its first road game of the season.
No. 12 Alabama defeats Clemson, 90-84
Alabama's daunting nonconference schedule continued with a 90-84 victory over Clemson.
After facing St. John's, Purdue, Illinois, Gonzaga and Maryland, the Crimson Tide started fast against the Tigers and then held on for the narrow win. They had a 15-point halftime lead and made enough plays down the stretch to hold off the visitors.
Labaron Philon Jr. was unstoppable with 29 points, while Amari Allen posted a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. Five different Crimson Tide players finished in double figures.
Five different Clemson players also scored in double figures, but it didn't make enough defensive plays against a strong Alabama attack.
LSU defeats Boston College, 78-69 OT
LSU is still undefeated, but it took a dramatic comeback to improve to 8-0 with a 78-69 overtime win over Boston College.
Dedan Thomas Jr. eliminated a four-point deficit in the final minute of regulation with a jumper and layup in the lane, and the Tigers notched a key defensive stop to force the extra period.
It was all LSU from there, as clutch free throws and shooting proved to be the difference.
Thomas finished with 23 points, seven assists and four rebounds, and Marquel Sutton posted a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds.
No. 17 Vanderbilt defeats SMU, 88-69
In a battle of undefeated foes, Vanderbilt cruised its way to an 88-69 victory over SMU.
Tyler Tanner was the driving force behind the win and finished with 26 points, six assists and five rebounds on 10-of-14 shooting from the field. His ability to get into the lane and either finish himself or facilitate when defenders collapsed on him proved unstoppable for the Mustangs.
Vanderbilt's defense also set the tone and swarmed SMU's shooters on the perimeter. The visitors were just 2-of-17 from downtown and never made a realistic charge after falling behind by double digits in the first half.
No. 20 Auburn defeats NC State, 83-73
After dropping games to Houston and Michigan earlier in the season, Auburn now has plenty of momentum after following up its win over St. John's with an 83-73 victory over NC State.
It was a two-man show for the Tigers.
Kevin Overton finished with 29 points and nine rebounds behind 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range, while Keyshawn Hall notched 28 points and 10 boards on 5-of-7 shooting from deep. NC State had to pick its poison whenever they were on the floor together, and the result was an impressive win for Auburn.
Quadir Copeland did what he could for the Wolfpack with 22 points, but it wasn't enough on the road.
Mississippi State defeats Georgia Tech, 85-73
It has been a lackluster start to the season for Mississippi State, but improved to 4-4 with an 85-73 victory over Georgia Tech.
Josh Hubbard led the way for the visitors with 25 points, five assists and four rebounds on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. He was one of four Bulldogs who finished in double figures as the SEC earned a win in the challenge.
Kowacie Reeves Jr.'s 23 points, nine rebounds and six steals weren't enough for the Yellow Jackets to avoid their first home loss of the season.
Virginia defeats Texas, 88-69
It was a night to forget for the ACC, but the conference can at least take solace in Virginia's efforts on the road.
The Cavaliers defeated Texas 88-69 to improve to 7-1 on the season. They jumped out to an overwhelming 46-27 halftime lead and were able to play the Longhorns even after intermission to secure the victory.
Chance Mallory led the scoring off the bench with 16 points as one of five Virginia players to score in double figures. He connected on both of his three-point attempts and consistently got to the free-throw line as Virginia pulled away.
Only two Texas players scored in double figures, although Dailyn Swain posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards.
