Lanning mentioned the community college in a Nov. 22 press conference, when he was asked about his College Football Playoff hopes after Oregon's win over USC.
The Ducks head coach answered, "This conference is a really good conference. It's competitive. We didn't play Chattanooga State today, like some other places. We competed."
Chattanooga State has softball, baseball, basketball and volleyball programs, but does not field a football team.
Lanning was presumably aiming his comment as a jab toward conferences, like the SEC, who scheduled fewer than the Big Ten's nine conference games each season.
Oregon itself has also received criticism for its strength of schedule this season. Prior to the win over USC, the Ducks had only claimed one ranked win.
That victory came back in September over Penn State, before the Nittany Lions slipped out of the Top 25 altogether.
Oregon was still listed at No. 5 on Tuesday's penultimate CFP rankings.
Beyond a debate about strength of scheduling and its impact on the playoff, Lanning's comment sparked brought some attention to the community college.
Chattanooga State president Rebecca Ashford even responded to Lanning's comments in an opinion submitted last week to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
The school could be getting even more publicity now that Lanning is repping their merchandise.
