Joey McGuire, Texas Tech Reportedly Agree to Extension, Latest Details on New Contract
Texas Tech is reportedly re-committing to head coach Joey McGuire ahead of the team's first trip to the Big 12 championship game.
McGuire and the Red Raiders have agreed to a new seven-year deal that runs through the 2032 season, Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger reported Tuesday.
The deal features $7 million base annual salary, not including multiple incentive bonuses, according to Dellenger.
McGuire is making about $4.5 million this season on his previous contract, which was set to run through 2028, according to USA Today and The Athletic.
McGuire originally joined Texas Tech on a six-year, $20.2 million contract in November 2021.
The Red Raiders went on to beat Oklahoma and Texas in the same season for the first time en route to a 8-5 finish featuring a Texas Bowl win.
McGuire, who received a raise and extension after that season, also led the Red Raiders to winning records and bowl game appearances in 2023 and 2024.
The program has reached new heights with an 11-1 record in 2025. A win over BYU in Saturday's conference title game would seal the first playoff bid in Red Raiders program history.
McGuire's extension comes shortly after Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin's departure from his potentially playoff-bound program following his acceptance of the head coaching job at LSU.
When asked Monday about the landscape of coaching turnover in college football, McGuire answered, per Ty Kaplan of the Dallas Morning News: "I'm at a place that I'm going to be for the rest of my life, so I really don't care."
McGuire went on to express gratitude for support from the Texas Tech administration, specifically billionaire booster Cody Campbell, in a Tuesday episode of ESPN's Pat McAfee Show.
Campbell has been credited with leading a drive to spend more than $20 million on Texas Tech's 2025 roster, per the Dallas Morning News' Lia Assimakopoulos.
"This administration... these guys, man, they went all in," McGuire told McAfee. "So every day, I come to work, and I'm lucky. I work with the best AD in the country, the best president in the country, and they put everything behind this that we can win at a high level."
With a strong NIL pipeline and long-term head coaching plan both in place, the Red Raiders will hope to remain a playoff contender going forward.
For now, McGuire and Texas Tech will turn their focus toward the Big 12 championship game. The Red Raiders can begin working toward sealing their playoff bid starting with Saturday's 12 p.m. ET kickoff at the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium.
