How Much Is LSU Paying Lane Kiffin, Brian Kelly, Ed Orgeron After Latest HC Contract?
Lane Kiffin is LSU's only head football coach.
But he is one of three head coaches the SEC school is paying.
As Front Office Sports highlighted, the Tigers are on the hook for payouts to Kiffin, Brian Kelly and Ed Orgeron:
Wilson Alexander of The Advocate reported that won't be the case for much longer, as Orgeron's final buyout payment of $426,000 will be paid out on Dec. 15. Still, LSU is paying out quite a significant amount of money for its coaching situation following its 7-5 season.
Alexander also reported Kiffin will make $91 million with incentive opportunities over the course of his seven-year deal. At $13 million per year, he will be the second-highest paid coach in the country behind only Georgia's Kirby Smart ($13.3 million), per USA Today's coaching database.
LSU announced the hiring Sunday, while Kiffin released a statement explaining he preferred to coach Ole Miss through the College Football Playoff but was not granted his request:
The entire hiring process became quite a saga, especially since the Rebels were chasing a CFP spot while Kiffin's name continued to be connected to openings at LSU and Florida.
There were reports of Ole Miss giving him an ultimatum to decide, which Kiffin denied, and then a public announcement from Rebels athletic director Keith Carter that a decision would be publicized following the team's rivalry game against Mississippi State.
It took a bit longer than perhaps some expected after that rivalry game, but LSU landed its high-profile hire after firing Kelly earlier this season.
The Tigers are one of the elite programs in the entire sport, although they have not been in the CFP since Orgeron was the coach during the 2019 campaign. Kelly never lived up to championship expectations, and now it will be up to Kiffin to reestablish the team as an SEC powerhouse.
He will certainly be under the microscope as he attempts to do so.
