Ryan Silverfield Reportedly Lands Arkansas Contract, What to Know About Ex-Memphis HC

Scott PolacekNov 30, 2025

The Arkansas football program reportedly has its next head coach.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Sunday that the Razorbacks will hire Ryan Silverfield to fill the vacancy created in September when they fired Sam Pittman.

Silverfield was the head coach at Memphis during the last six seasons.

This comes after there were so many rumors South Florida head coach Alex Golesh would become the head coach at Arkansas that both he and USF CEO of athletics Rob Higgins addressed the situation:

Golesh notably said such reports weren't true, which turned out to be the case with the Razorbacks deciding on Silverfield. What's more, Auburn announced Sunday it hired Golesh.

As for Arkansas, it fired Pittman following a 56-13 loss to Notre Dame in September that dropped its record to 2-3. Yet things only got worse as the season progressed considering the Razorbacks didn't win another game and finished the 2025 campaign at 2-10 overall and 0-8 in SEC play.

One of those losses came against Silverfield's Tigers back in September before Pittman was fired.

That Memphis defeated a team from the SEC shouldn't have come as much of a surprise, as it has been one of the most consistent Group of Five programs in the country under Silverfield.

The Tigers are 50-24 in the last six years and won a bowl game in four of the last five campaigns. They also won double-digit games in 2023 and 2024, which marked the first back-to-back 10-win seasons in program history.

Memphis entered the 2025 season with high expectations as a result and started off 8-1 before losing the final three games to Tulane, East Carolina and Navy. It was in the middle of the College Football Playoff picture prior to the three-game losing streak but still won enough games to qualify for another bowl.

Silverfield is now tasked with rebuilding Arkansas into a winner in the daunting SEC.

While the Razorbacks' record this season indicates that will be a difficult job, they were 7-6 in 2024 and lost to Ole Miss, Memphis, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Mississippi State and LSU by one score in 2025.

They weren't that far away from finishing with a much better record and will now look to make significant strides with their new coach.
