What's Next for Bill Belichick and UNC? CFB Fans Weigh In on NFL Icon's 1st Year as HC

Taylyn Hadley Nov 30, 2025

Bill Belichick and the University of North Carolina were routed 42-19 by rivals NC State on the road Saturday, closing out the six-time NFL Super Bowl champion's debut college season.

Belichick finished his inaugural season at UNC 4-8, the school's worst record since 2018 when they went 2-9 under Larry Fedora in his final season.

In his head coaching career, Belichick has finished 50 percent or below in the regular season only four times: his final season with Cleveland in 1995, his first season with New England in 2000 (they won the Super Bowl the following year), his final season with the Patriots in 2023, and now his first season with UNC.

After a rocky start to his college coaching career, it's unclear where Belichick could take the program if UNC sticks by him. His resume shows he has a history of rebounding from down years in the NFL, finishing with a 302-165 all-time record.

Fans weighed in on Belichick's future at UNC after a disappointing debut season.

Rumors swirled in early October about the 73-year-old's desire to remain at North Carolina, with reports suggesting he was considering an exit after a rocky start to UNC's season.

"Reports about my looking for a buyout or trying to leave here is categorically false," Belichick said in October, per ESPN's David Hale. "There's zero truth to any of that. I'm glad I'm here. We're working toward our goals. We believe very much in the process. We need to just keep working and grinding away, and that's exactly what we're doing."

"It's a learning curve," Belichick continued. "We're all in it together. But we're making a lot of progress, and the process will eventually produce the results we want like they have everywhere else I've been."

Whether Belichick's future remains in North Carolina or he heads toward retirement, ESPN's Adam Schefter told WEEI Radio that a return to the NFL appears to be "more noise than anything."

"I don't know what to say about (the rumors), to be honest with you," Schefter said. "I just don't know real it is or isn't, and I don't know how interested he is or isn't in going (back) to the NFL. I think it's a lot of noise more than it is anything else."

With much uncertainty surrounding Belichick's future, clarity is expected to emerge as the offseason progresses.
