What's Next for Deion Sanders and Colorado? Fans Put HC on Hot Seat After 3-9 Season
Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes fell 24-14 to Kansas State on the road on Saturday, finishing 3-9 and 1-8 in the Big 12.
With the loss, the Buffs capped their worst season of the Coach Prime era. They went 9-4 last year after a 4-8 finish in his first season as head coach.
Senior quarterback Kaidon Salter threw for 172 yards and an interception while completing 14-of-25 passes. Running back Micah Welch scored both touchdowns and finished with 20 yards on 10 carries.
Fans weighed in on the future of Sanders and the program after a disappointing season.
Sanders took over a 1-11 Colorado program in 2022 after Karl Dorrell was fired following an 0-5 start and replaced by interim coach Mike Sanford, who went 1-6. He led the Buffs to the Alamo Bowl in 2024 and a CFP ranking as high as No. 16.
Year three did not go as expected after losing his son Shedeur Sanders and 2025 Heisman winner Travis Hunter to the NFL draft, flipping the roster and the program's trajectory.
Colorado has struggled to find consistent quarterback play without Shedeur, averaging 205.6 passing yards per game, near the bottom of the national average.
The Buffs have a small group of hard commits in 2026, per 247Sports, and will need to be aggressive in recruiting and the transfer portal to rebuild the roster to its 2024 level when Coach Prime shined.
That is, if Sanders stays. Rumblings last offseason tied him to the Dallas Cowboys' vacancy, but his options may be more limited after a disappointing 3-9 season.
