Will Lane Kiffin Go to LSU? CFB Insider Dishes on Latest Rumors Ahead of Decision

Adam WellsNov 29, 2025

One day after leading Mississippi to a 38-19 win over Mississippi State that could end up securing the program a spot in the College Football Playoff, Lane Kiffin may not be around to see the fruits of his labor.

Per The Athletic's Bruce Feldman, people at LSU are "very confident" Kiffin will accept an offer to become the team's new head coach.

Feldman added that LSU's offer to Kiffin is a seven-year contract worth around $100 million.

Kiffin told reporters after the Rebels' victory in the Egg Bowl that he plans to make a decision about whether he will stay at Ole Miss or take another job at some point on Saturday, but he had not yet made up his mind.

"There's a lot [that goes] into it," Kiffin said. "It's a hard decision. You guys have them all the time. You've got to make decisions about jobs you take and where you move, and we get paid a lot, so I understand we're under a lot of spotlight and scrutiny."

In addition to LSU, Florida has also been pursuing Kiffin after firing Billy Napier on Oct. 19.

However, Zach Abolverdi of GatorsOnline.com reported on Friday that Gators officials feel like Kiffin's "erratic communication" suggests he is not as interested in them as they are in him.

ESPN's Pete Thamel added that Florida has shifted its focus from Kiffin and interviewed around a dozen other candidates.

Kiffin, who is in his sixth season as Mississippi's head coach, is currently the ninth-highest-paid coach in the country with a $9 million average annual salary. He is signed through the Dec. 31, 2031, after a victory over Oklahoma this season triggered an automatic one-year extension of his current contract.

Depending on the exact terms of LSU's offer, Kiffin could become the highest-paid coach in the country. Georgia's Kirby Smart currently tops the list with a $13.3 million average annual salary.

The LSU job came open on Oct. 26 when Brian Kelly was fired less than 24 hours after a 49-25 loss to Texas A&M. Thamel reported on Tuesday the school publicly stated Kelly was fired without cause, meaning he is owed the $54 million on his buyout.

Mississippi has won at least 10 games in four of the last five seasons. Its 11 wins in 2025 are tied for the most in a single season in program history.

Since being hired as Ole Miss' head coach in December 2019, Kiffin has a 55-19 record. Jon Vaught (190) and Billy Brewer (66) are the only coaches with more wins for the Rebels.

Mississippi could play in the SEC Championship Game if Alabama loses to Auburn on Saturday.
