Miami Doubles Up Virginia Tech, Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive
3 of 4
The Miami Hurricanes have preached execution of their game plan since suffering their second loss, and the team has done just that.
The nation's No. 13 squad hung 34 on Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon, and despite a moment or two when it looked like the Hokies might rally, they snuffed out any possibility of an upset.
Quarterback Carson Beck completed 27-of-32 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns while the defense amassed five sacks in a pressure-packed afternoon.
The team converted over 50 percent of their third-down attempts and were a perfect two-for-two on fourth-down tries.
Most importantly, the team did not turn the ball over.
The Hokies did manage a late score, and recovered an inside kick to threaten a heart-pounding conclusion to the game, but the defense worked its magic, forced a key fumble, and set up a another scoring drive to put the game out of reach.
It will need to play with that sense of urgency next week against Pittsburgh, who upset one-loss Georgia Tech Saturday to keep itself in the discussion for an ACC title.
They may have to do it with a banged-up secondary, though, after turnover-forcing machine, safety Jakobe Thomas suffered an arm injury and did not return to the field.
Oregon Blows Out USC to Stay in Title Hunt
4 of 4
Two quality defenses squared off Saturday but it was the offense that proved the difference-maker in Oregon's double-digit victory over USC in Eugene.
Ducks quarterback Dante Moore went 22-of-30 for 257 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. Running back Noah Whittington carried 19 times for 104 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver caught six balls, two of which were touchdowns.
The Ducks hung 436 yards on the Trojans, the defense forced two interceptions from Jayden Maiava, and Oregon kept its hopes of a College Football Playoff appearance alive.
It was a high-pressure situations for the Ducks, who could not afford a loss and still have any expectations of a playoff appearance.
The one-loss team's only defeat this season came at the hands of the No. 2 team in the country, the Indiana Hoosiers, and they have hopes of competing for a Big 10 title, no matter how unrealistic that may seem.
To have any chance of making that a reality, they have to defeat Washington next week.
A loss in that game and the Ducks' playoff hopes take a hit they may not be able to recover from.
