Where Will Oklahoma Land in CFB Playoff Bracket? Experts Predict After Win vs. Mizzou

Mike ChiariNov 22, 2025

The Oklahoma Sooners took care of business Saturday, beating the No. 22 Missouri Tigers 17-6 at Memorial Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma.

OU entered the week ranked No. 8 in the College Football Playoff rankings, largely on the strength of last week's upset win over Alabama.

While Saturday was far from a perfect performance, especially with regard to the Sooners' offense, the defense was dominant as usual, marking the fifth time this season that Oklahoma surrendered seven or fewer points.

The social media reaction after the game was mixed with some putting Oklahoma firmly in the CFP in the event of a win over LSU next week, and others questioning if the Sooners are a viable CFP team because of their offense:

Entering the week, Oklahoma ranked eighth in the nation in scoring defense with 14.8 points allowed per game, but only 64th in scoring offense with 28.3 points per contest.

Head coach Brent Venables has long been among the best defensive minds in college football, winning a pair of national titles as the defensive coordinator at Clemson.

Because of that, it isn't much of a surprise that Oklahoma's defense is among the best in the nation, and there is no doubt that the unit could be a major problem for opponents in the CFP should the Sooners make it.

The offense, while talented, has lagged far behind the defense, and if the Sooners either miss the CFP or don't go on a deep run, the offense is likely to be the culprit.

Quarterback John Mateer leads the way, and although it feels like a long time ago at this point, he was a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate early in the season.

He hasn't looked the same since missing one game due to a broken bone in his throwing hand in October, but his dual-threat ability makes him a potential big play waiting to happen.

Against Mizzou, Mateer completed only 14 of his 30 passing attempts for 173 yards, but he didn't throw an interception, and he threw two touchdowns, including one for 87 yards to Isaiah Sategna III.

Mateer also rushed for 60 yards, as he continues to keep opposing defenses honest with his legs.

Aside from Mateer, Xavier Robinson was Oklahoma's leading rusher with just 42 yards, which isn't good enough for a team predicated on playing tightly contested, defensive games.

The Sooners have one more game to tie everything together, but regardless of how they do it, all signs point toward a win over LSU next week being enough to clinch a CFP spot at 10-2.
