Dan Lanning Talks Future as Oregon HC in Video Amid CFB Coaching Carousel Rumors

Mike ChiariNov 22, 2025

Prior to Saturday's home game against USC, Dan Lanning reiterated his commitment to being Oregon's head football coach for the long haul.

Appearing on ESPN's College GameDay, Lanning said the "grass is damn green" regarding his situation at Oregon, before adding, "I appreciate what I have here so much. This will be my spot. This is where I'm at forever."

Several high-profile coaching jobs have opened up this season, including Penn State, LSU, Florida and Auburn, but Lanning has remained steadfast in his insistence that he wants to remain with the Ducks.

While several significant names have been linked to those jobs, Lanning has not been among them, and he has gone on record multiple times about his love for Oregon.

During an appearance last month on the Rich Eisen Show (h/t SI.com's Angela Miele), Lanning made it clear that he didn't want to coach anywhere else, saying, "I'm not leaving Oregon. Yeah, as long as I win. That's what I always tell my kids. If your dad wins, we'll be at Oregon. So I gotta win."

Lanning's desire to stay at Oregon is understandable given the success the Ducks have enjoyed during his tenure.

Following a stint as the defensive coordinator at Georgia, Lanning took over as Oregon's head coach in 2022. Over the past four seasons, he has compiled a 44-7 record, and he led the Ducks to their first Big Ten title last season.

Lanning also took the Ducks to the College Football Playoff with an undefeated record last season, although they fell to eventual national champion Ohio State in the quarterfinals.

Despite losing quarterback Dillon Gabriel to the Cleveland Browns via the NFL draft, Lanning's Ducks have not missed a beat this season.

New starting quarterback Dante Moore has established himself as a Heisman Trophy candidate, and Oregon enters Saturday's game against USC with a 9-1 record.

With a No. 7 ranking, the Ducks are in a good spot to return to the CFP this season, and they are essentially guaranteed to do so with wins over USC and Washington to close out the regular season.

Oregon has been one of the most consistent and successful programs in college football, as it is one victory away from a fifth consecutive season with 10 or more wins.

Because of that, a strong argument can be made that none of the open positions offer Lanning a better chance at national title contention than what he already has at Oregon.
