Will Deion Sanders Attend Shedeur's Rumored 1st NFL Start for Browns vs. Raiders?

Timothy RappNov 18, 2025

Deion Sanders doesn't know if he'll attend his son's first NFL start on Sunday, when Shedeur Sanders and the Cleveland Browns face the Las Vegas Raiders.

"Don't know," the Colorado head coach told reporters Tuesday (37:30 mark) when asked. "Haven't made that decision as of yet. I'm so focused on what we [Colorado] have in hand, I'm not thinking about that, although I just got off the phone with him a minute ago. But I'm really focused on what we have in hand."

The younger Sanders is expected to start against the Raiders, with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel in the concussion protocol. He left the second half of Sunday's loss against the Baltimore Ravens with the injury and Sanders looked rough in relief, finishing 4-of-16 for 47 yards, an interception and two sacks taken. He also fumbled, though the Browns recovered.

It wasn't all bad from Sanders, who did throw a nice pass into the end zone on the final drive of the game that hit his receiver in the hands but was pried away by the defender, leading to an incompletion. But for most of his appearance, he looked hurried and uncomfortable, bothered by Baltimore's consistent pressures and blitzes.

While the Browns have been steadfast in the assertion that Gabriel will remain the starter when healthy, getting a look at Sanders in a game setting—after a week of practice with the first-team offense—will give them a chance to get a better idea if he can compete at this level.

The Browns have an unsettled quarterback position, with Gabriel not really impressing thus far as the starter. But the team has two first-round picks at the 2026 NFL draft and needs to decide if one of them should go towards a quarterback.

If either Gabriel or Sanders looked like the guy, the answer would obviously be no, and the team could focus on other positions. The jury is still out on both, however, albeit with an extremely small sample size for Sanders. It will get a bit bigger on Sunday, it appears, for better or worse.
