Sam Leavitt Reportedly Wants to Transfer, What Are QB's Top Landing Spots in Portal?

Paul KasabianNov 18, 2025

Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt is "unlikely" to return to the Sun Devils next year in order to seek "lucrative offers from other programs to enter the transfer portal," according to The Athletic's Sam Khan Jr., Antonio Morales and David Ubben.

Miami and Texas Tech were mentioned as potential landing spots, according to the report.

"The school source told The Athletic that Miami and Texas Tech are two potential destinations for Leavitt. Both have starting quarterbacks (Carson Beck and Behren Morton) who are in their final year of eligibility, and both have shown willingness in past cycles to spend big in the portal for players at positions of need."

Leavitt is a redshirt sophomore who began his collegiate career at Michigan State in 2023 before transferring to Arizona State in 2024, when the Sun Devils won the Big 12, reached the College Football Playoff and nearly took down No. 5 seed Texas in the quarterfinals before losing 39-31 in double overtime.

Leavitt fared well in 2024, completing 61.7 percent of his passes for 2,885 yards (8.2 yards per attempt), 24 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He also posted a 150.2 quarterback rating and rushed for 443 yards and five touchdowns.

Leavitt's 2025 season was marred by a foot injury he suffered during his team's 27-24 win over Baylor on Sept. 20. He played three more games after the ailment on but the injury kept lingering. Eventually, Leavitt decided to have season-ending surgery.

For the year, Leavitt played in seven games and completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 10 touchdowns (three interceptions) for 1,628 yards. He also rushed for 306 yards and five scores.

Pete Nakos and Steve Wiltfong of On3 first reported that Leavitt's return to the program was "doubtful."

Leavitt's brother, Dallin, denied the report. He wrote: "That's not where things are right now...he's still deciding what he wants to do."

Ultimately, a lot has to play out still. In the meantime, Jeff Sims is leading Arizona State, which has gone 7-3, for the remainder of the year. The Sun Devils close the regular season at Colorado and vs. Arizona.
