NFL Scout Reportedly Thinks Carson Beck Is 'Really, Really High-Level Backup' in Pros
The Miami Hurricanes' season has taken a turn for the worse, but at least one NFL scout still believes in quarterback Carson Beck's future.
"One scout I talked to was like, 'I'm not ready to give up on Carson Beck yet despite all the stuff,'" NFL draft analyst Todd McShay said (nine-minute mark). "'I don't think he's a definite starter, but I think he's a really, really high-level backup.'"
Beck has been under the spotlight for years at this point as Georgia's starting quarterback in 2023 and 2024 before transferring to Miami ahead of the 2024 campaign. There was a time when he was seen as a potential future No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, but that doesn't appear to be the case any longer.
The latest mock draft from B/R's NFL Scouting Department did not project him as a first-round pick, and a scout expressing belief that Beck can still be a "high-level backup" does not exactly scream top-10 selection even if it was a positive evaluation.
He has shown flashes of his potential this season, but the turnovers have also been a problem as he's completed 72.5 percent of his passes for 1,947 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions through eight games.
Beck also threw 12 interceptions last season at Georgia, so turnovers are not a new concern.
Miami has lost two of its last three games as well and checked in at No. 18 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings after looking like a national title contender earlier in the season. Beck had four interceptions in the loss to Louisville and two interceptions in the loss to SMU.
There is still time for the Hurricanes to turn their season around during the stretch run, which could bolster Beck's draft profile. If one scout already sees him as a high-level backup, a strong finish would likely mean others view him in a positive light as well.
But his days of being seen as a potential No. 1 pick are probably in the past.
