Donovan Mitchell Makes NBA History After Kid Called Him 'Washed' on NBA 2K

Adam WellsNov 6, 2025

If you want to know what motivates Donovan Mitchell, trash talking him on NBA 2K is apparently a good place to start.

In the Cleveland Cavaliers' 132-121 win over the Philadelphia 76ers, Mitchell joined Michael Jordan as the only players in NBA history to have a game with at least 45 points on 70 percent shooting from the field, eight assists and make 10 free throws without a miss.

Speaking to reporters after his historic performance, Mitchell said he arrived at the arena in a bad mood because a kid told him he was "washed" while they were playing 2K earlier in the day.

With respect to the kid's opinion, it's easy to assume he just wasn't paying attention to Mitchell and/or the Cavs early this season because the six-time All-Star has been fantastic even before Wednesday night.

Mitchell entered the game averaging 29.5 points on 55.0 percent shooting (43.6 percent from three) and 4.5 assists in six starts. He one-upped himself against the Sixers with 46 points on 15-of-21 shooting (10-of-10 free throws), eight assists and four rebounds in 35 minutes.

Jordan's game came during his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls on Jan. 26, 1985. He finished with 45 points on 17-of-24 shooting (11-of-11 free throws), 10 assists, eight rebounds and four blocks in a 117-104 win over the Atlanta Hawks.

If Mitchell plays a better game this season, the Cavs are going to be in great shape. They have had an up and down start to the year with a 5-3 record, including back-to-back losses against the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors last week.

It doesn't seem like Mitchell is a player who has ever lacked for motivation going into a game, but the added juice from being trash-talked by a kid on NBA 2K worked wonders for his game.

If the Cavs can find out who the person is, maybe they will bring him in to work his magic in the playoffs to see if it helps Mitchell lead them to the NBA Finals.
