Report: Deulofeu Expected to Be Ready for Season Opener
Wednesday, July 22
The Toffees acquired Deulofeu from FC Barcelona for €6 million last month in a move expected to make Everton a far more dynamic and dangerous team.
Unfortunately for them, the 21-year-old winger suffered a hamstring injury in an Asia Trophy match against Arsenal. Despite speculation to the contrary, Kristian Walsh of the Liverpool Echo is hearing that the Spaniard will be ready to go when Everton face Watford on Aug. 8.
Deulofeu was a big get for Everton due to his ability to make things happen in the attacking third. He also has familiarity with the squad as he played at Goodison Park on loan during the 2013-14 season before playing at Sevilla last year.
After he was officially sold to the Toffees, Deulofeu expressed a great deal of joy to be back in the fold:
Everton manager Roberto Martinez was also thrilled to have a player of Deulofeu's caliber at his disposal, according to EvertonFC.com:
"Gerard needs no introduction to anyone here at Everton, for we are all well aware of his incredible footballing talent," Martinez said. "We got to know him really well from his loan period, not only as such a talented player but also his great character. He will be a fantastic asset to our club."
The start of his second stint at Everton hasn't gone as smoothly as hoped thus far, but there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel with regard to his hamstring ailment.
The Toffees need a healthy and productive Deulofeu on the pitch to improve upon their disappointing 11th-place finish in the EPL standings from last season, and early indications are that they will have precisely that come Aug. 8.
