Draymond Green Sees Steve Kerr Returning to Warriors on New Contract amid NBA Rumors

Joseph ZuckerNov 4, 2025

Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green doesn't expect head coach Steve Kerr to leave the Bay Area with his contract expiring at the end of the 2025-26 season.

The Athletic's Sam Amick asked Green whether he has envisioned playing for a different coach, an idea teammate Stephen Curry doesn't want to entertain. The four-time All-Star responded that he doesn't like change but believes it shouldn't be a concern with Kerr.

"But I don't sit and think about it because I don't foresee Steve going anywhere. I don't think we're done. I think we've still got a lot left to give," Green said. "We've all done this together, so I don't foresee him going anywhere anyway, you know? But I very much so want to finish this thing with the people that I've been through it with. Adjusting to a new coach in year 14, going to 15, I cannot sit here and tell you that I have the desire to do that. But I also don't see our coach going anywhere."

Until Kerr signs a new deal, his long-term future will be murky.

The 60-year-old is into his 12th season with the Warriors, and the organization has had its eyes on a title for almost the entirety of that run. It wouldn't be a shock if he decides he has experienced enough stress for now and wants a break.

This year will also be revealing as to whether Golden State still has a championship window with Curry and Green. Should the team lose in the Western Conference semifinals again, Kerr could reasonably conclude he has taken the current roster as far as he can.

In that scenario, the veteran coach may think a different voice on the sideline could yield different results, or the prospect of rebuilding down the line in a post-Stephen Curry era isn't enticing.

When this all played out last time, Kerr signed a two-year extension in February, well into the 2023-24 campaign. It's too early to draw any conclusions from the lack of an agreement between he and the Warriors.

A contract stretching for an additional season or two feels like the likeliest outcome because it would help Kerr potentially line up his exit with Curry and Green's retirements. And he wouldn't be committed to Golden State for too long into the future.
