Mario Cristobal Calls Out Miami, Says They Need to Be 'Grown Ass' Men and Fix Mistakes
After No. 10 Miami suffered a surprising 26-20 overtime loss to SMU on Saturday, Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal wasn't pleased with his team's performance.
Cristobal said there was "no excuse" for the penalties that the Hurricanes committed during the game and they need to be "grown ass" men to clean up mistakes moving forward.
Penalties were a major issue for Miami in the loss, getting flagged 12 times for 96 yards. Meanwhile, SMU was penalized four times for 40 yards.
A particularly costly mistake came late in the fourth quarter, with the Hurricanes holding a 20-17 edge and the Mustangs facing fourth down with nine yards to gain.
Miami pass-rusher Marquise Lightfoot was then called for an unnecessary roughness penalty on Mustangs quarterback Kevin Jennings, moving the chains and helping SMU drive down the field before sending the game to overtime.
Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck continued his recent struggles in the defeat, finishing 26-of-38 for 274 yards and two touchdowns compared to two interceptions.
Beck has now been picked off six times over his past three starts.
After Cristobal's squad opened the 2025 season with a 5-0 record, it has now lost two of its past three games against ACC opponents.
