Carson Beck Crushed by Fans, Miami's CFP Bracket Hopes Fade with Upset Loss to SMU

Mike ChiariNov 1, 2025

The No. 10 Miami Hurricanes suffered their second loss of the season Saturday, falling 26-20 in overtime to the SMU Mustangs at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas.

Senior quarterback Carson Beck threw an interception to safety Ahmaad Moses on the first drive of overtime, allowing SMU to win it with a one-yard touchdown run by T.J. Harden.

Beck threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns in the game, but he also threw a pair of interceptions, both of which led to SMU touchdowns, including the game-winner.

After starting for two seasons at Georgia, Beck transferred to Miami this season. The Hurricanes got off to a 5-0 start, but they have lost two of their past three games and now face an uphill climb in terms of reaching the College Football Playoff.

Since Beck's OT interception essentially ended Miami's chances of winning Saturday's game, he received a ton of criticism for his performance on social media:

Over the Hurricanes past three games, Beck has thrown three touchdown passes and six interceptions, leading to questions about whether Miami made the right move in pursuing Beck to replace Cam Ward.

Beck had the Hurricanes looking like a potential ACC champion and CFP team for the first month of the season, but at 6-2 overall and 2-2 in ACC play, they may now have to run the table to even have a chance at the CFP:

Miami benefited from an advantageous schedule, as Saturday marked the team's first game outside the state of Florida this season. However, the Canes have now lost each of their past three games outside Florida dating back to last season, per On3.com's Brett McMurphy:

Since the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014, Miami has never qualified, and that streak could extend to this year.

The CFP was expanded from four teams to 12 last year, but the Hurricanes still missed out despite strong play from Ward.

A second loss puts Miami in a precarious position as it relates to the CFP this year as well, and if the Hurricanes don't make it, it is fair to wonder if that could impact head coach Mario Cristobal's future with the program.

At 6-3, SMU is perhaps unlikely to return to the CFP after making it for the first time last year, but the victory over Miami gave the Mustangs a 4-1 conference record, meaning it is still possible to reach the ACC Championship Game and qualify automatically for the CFP with a win.

As for Miami, the remaining regular-season schedule features all unranked teams in Syracuse, NC State, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh.

That suggests running the table is possible, but given that the Hurricanes' two losses came against teams that were unranked at the time, it is far from guaranteed.
