Lane Kiffin Explains Viral Video With Oklahoma's David Stone After Ole Miss Win
Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday and offered some insight into the postgame trash talk he directed toward Oklahoma defensive tackle David Stone following Saturday's 34-26 win.
"That happens a lot with me and players, the interaction and after the game," he admitted. "Especially defensive players. A lot of times they'll say things to me in warmups. I dunno. Maybe they view me as different than other coaches, they kinda talk to me like they do a player. I embrace it, probably because I give it to them sometimes too. [Stone] said a lot during the game, when he was on our sideline. He'd be like, 'You ain't gonna score all day.' I really wasn't trying to [trash talk him] on camera. And interesting enough, I've had a number of players transfer here over the years who said one of the reasons was, 'We love the way you interact with us on the other side during the game, and we wanted to play for a coach like that.' So I think our players actually love it."
Kiffin had previously told reporters that he didn't seek out Stone after the game, he just happened to be near him before his postgame interview with ESPN.
Kiffin talking a bit of smack with players might look a little different if Ole Miss was struggling, but the head coach has them playing fantastic football at the moment. At 7-1 with a very manageable schedule down the stretch, Ole Miss looks like a very real contender to reach the College Football Playoff this season.
There's plenty to be done, of course, but for now, Kiffin and the Rebels are backing up the talk.
