Lane Kiffin Puts Ole Miss in Prime CFP Position as Fans Hype Win vs. John Mateer, OU
There have been plenty of rumors linking Lane Kiffin to other potential coaching vacancies of late, particularly Florida. Ole Miss fans probably don't want him to go anywhere after a key win on Saturday, however.
The No. 8 Rebels went on the road and defeated No. 13 Oklahoma, 34-26, behind Trinidad Chambliss' 314 yards and a touchdown through the air and 53 yards on the ground.
Running back Kewan Lacy added 79 yards and two scores, while wideout Winston Watkins caught four passes for 110 yards.
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer finished 17-of-31 for 223 yards and a touchdown, adding 17 yards on the ground.
But following a week when Kiffin was in the headlines, he was the obvious story after the game, especially given the work he's done with Chambliss and the fact that Ole Miss now look like serious College Football Playoff contenders:
Granted, it wasn't all good vibes. Kiffin made a number of head-scratching decision in the contest, including going for a 4th-and-1 at his own 25-yard line, which failed and ultimately gave Oklahoma three free points. He also inserted Austin Simmons for Chambliss multiple times, with zero success doing so.
But a win's a win, and Ole Miss needed a bounce-back performance after last week's close loss against Georgia. The Rebels remain in the hunt for both an SEC title and a shot at the College Football Playoff.
Much will hinge on Kiffin's decisions as the year progresses. He made some questionable calls on Saturday, but ultimately led Ole Miss to a tough SEC win on the road.
