Blake Snell, Dodgers Bullpen Ripped By MLB Fans in World Series G1 Loss to Blue Jays

A historic Friday night pitching collapse by the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Toronto Blue Jays left the defending MLB champions facing a 1-0 World Series deficit.

The Dodgers allowed nine runs, including a grand slam from pinch hitter Addison Barger, in the sixth inning of an 11-4 Game 1 loss in Toronto.

Blake Snell allowed eight hits and five runs before stepping off the mound with the bases loaded in the middle of the sixth inning.

The Dodgers, though, remain -120 betting favorites at DraftKings Sportsbook to take home the Commissioner's Trophy. The Blue Jays are +100.

Fans criticized the Dodgers' bullpen, which was led by Emmet Sheehan and Anthony Banda, for being unable to get their club out of the jam.

Earlier Friday night, Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage celebrated becoming the first rookie starter to start the World Series since 2006 by retiring the side in the top of the first inning.

That started with forcing leadoff batter Shohei Ohtani into swinging strikeout.

The Blue Jays loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but the inning ended when Snell forced Daulton Varsho into a flyout.

The Dodgers responded by getting three runners on base in the top of the second. Yesavage escaped having only allowed one RBI single from Kike Hernandez.

Freddie Freeman then made it 2-0 for the Dodgers on a Will Smith single in the bottom of the second.

The Blue Jays evened the score in the fourth on a 423-foot home run from Varsho.

Snell stepped off the mound in the middle of the sixth after loading the bases with a walk, single and hit-by-pitch.

That's when things started getting out of hand for the Dodgers.

Ernie Clement first hit an RBI single off Sheehan to give the Blue Jays their first lead of the game.

The Blue Jays scored two more runs and kept the bases loaded thanks to an RBI walk and an RBI single.

The Dodgers put Banda on the mound in the hopes he could close out the inning only to watch Barger come in as a pinch-hitter and smash a 413-foot grand slam.

Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk then hit a two-run homer to finish off the inning by putting the home team ahead 11-2. The frame marked the first nine-run World Series inning since 1968, per MLB researcher Sarah Langs.

Ohtani hit a 357-foot home run in the top of the seventh. The home run marked his sixth of the postseason, leaving him eight homers behind Corey Seager in 2020 for the most in Dodgers playoff history, per Langs.

Ohtani's big hit was still too little, too late to cover for the Dodgers' bullpen collapse.

The Dodgers still need four more wins to first become the first franchise to repeat as champions since the New York Yankees won a third straight title in 2000.

The World Series is set to continue Saturday night when Game 2 begins in Toronto at 8 p.m. ET.

The Fall Classic returns to Los Angeles on Monday and Tuesday. If necessary, the series will return to Dodger Stadium for Wednesday's Game 5.
