Steve Spurrier Jr. Entrusted to Help QB DJ Lagway After Florida Fired Billy Napier

Florida interim head coach Billy Gonzales revealed that offensive analyst Steve Spurrier Jr. will help quarterback DJ Lagway as he attempts to get back on track, according to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).

Spurrier is the son of Steve Spurrier, who coached the Gators from 1990 through 2001.

As for Gonzales, he's preparing for his first game as Florida's head coach after the school fired Billy Napier on Sunday.

Under the Gators' new coaching regime, the younger Spurrier will work directly with Lagway on the sideline during games.

"Whenever you're around one of the greatest offensive minds in history, it's obviously going to rub off on you as well," Gonzales said, via ESPN. "He's been involved, but now he's going to have more of a role because he's going to be down there on the field with the quarterback looking in his eyes and getting a chance to talk to him and review the film that's being relayed.

"It's going to put us in a great situation to help DJ and the quarterbacks perform on the football field."

Florida sits at just 3-4 this season, with Lagway failing to exceed expectations through his first seven games.

The sophomore quarterback has completed 65.3 percent of his throws for 1,513 yards and nine touchdowns, but his nine interceptions are the most in the SEC.

The Gators have a tough task ahead of them in Gonzales' first game patrolling the sidelines, as they're set to face off against No. 5 Georgia on Saturday.
