Knicks' Karl-Anthony Towns Questionable for Opener vs. Cavs with Quad Injury
New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns' status for Wednesday's opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers is up in the air due to a quad strain.
After previously being doubtful, Towns is listed as questionable in the hours leading up to tip-off, via ESPN's Shams Charania:
The New York Post's Stefan Bondy reported KAT is actually trending toward playing despite the injury.
Josh Hart and Mitchell Robinson already unavailable due to injuries.
The Cavaliers aren't an opponent against whom you want to be without your two best bigs. Cleveland could have a big advantage inside if New York can't counteract the frontcourt tandem of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen with Robinson and Towns.
Heading into the new year, Towns might be the Knicks' most pivotal player.
Jalen Brunson played at an All-NBA level the last two seasons. Everyone knows what to expect from him as long as he stays healthy.
Mikal Bridges was an iron man in 2024-25, appearing in all 82 games and leading the league in minutes played (3,036).
Towns, on the other hand, acknowledged this week he's still feeling out his role in Mike Brown's offense.
The five-time All-Star wasn't afforded a full offseason to acclimate to his new surroundings. His trade went through on Oct. 2, three weeks out from New York's first game.
Towns should look more comfortable on the court now, and the lack of any big moves was a tacit endorsement from the front office in the current core. A deal for the Milwaukee Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo, which would've presumably included KAT, was reportedly there if the Knicks wanted it badly enough.
Should the Knicks exit the playoffs earlier than expected again, team president Leon Rose might question whether the quartet of Brunson, Towns, Bridges and OG Anunoby is worth keeping together moving forward.
