Recap
Hewitt was the hero for Australia, as he completed a brilliant comeback for his nation against Aleksandr Nedovyesov. The 34-year-old survived a tense opening to take the first set 7-6 on a 7-2 tiebreak.
Hewitt then asserted himself and stayed in command to win the next two sets 6-2 and 6-3. He and Sam Groth had been called into singles action after Kazakhstan had opened up a surprising 2-0 lead, according to BBC.co.uk.
Captain Wally Masur's decision not only proved an inspired one, but it also created a piece of history for Australia at the Davis Cup, per the Tennis Australia official Twitter feed:
Hewitt broke serve three times during the opening two sets to leave Nedovyesov searching for answers, per Jenny Cooke of the tournament's official site.
While Hewitt and Australia moved into the final four, Murray and Great Britain faced a gruelling challenge to join them there. Leading 2-1 against a formidable French team, Great Britain had the chance to close things out quickly with Murray facing Simon.
But the Frenchman refused to buckle in front of a partisan and vocal crowd at the famous Queen's Club in London. After dropping the opening set, Murray had to dig deep and was resolute in pushing the second to a tiebreak.
The turning point came when the determined Scot held his serve down 4-2, per the British Tennis official Twitter feed:
While Simon couldn't break serve, Murray soon showed him how it was done to level the set:
After more than one keenly contested rally during the tiebreak, he completed his brilliant comeback:
Murray continued winning the rallies and was soon three games up in the third set. Simon, the aggressor early on, appeared to have run out of ideas and was cracking under the pressure created by Murray's momentum.
BBC Sport's Piers Newbery highlighted one key to Murray's dominance:
Yet despite appearing in complete control, an errant backhand from Murray gifted Simon his first game of the third set and offered the struggling Frenchman a slither of hope. After Murray stretched his lead to 4-2, Simon served brilliantly to close the gap to a single game.
But Murray returned the favour and then threatened to break serve. He stood firm to eventually see out the set with yet another break for a 6-3 win that put Great Britain on the brink of the semi-finals.
Simon then found himself slowed by injury during the all-important fourth set:
One medical timeout later and Murray was ruthlessly putting Simon through his paces, forcing him to really stretch that hampered ankle. Despite some heroic late shots from Simon, Murray closed things out by recording a whitewash to advance.
BBC Tennis correspondent Russell Fuller felt the win owed everything to Murray's tremendous commitment to the Davis Cup cause, as well as his typically battling qualities:
Murray has catapulted Great Britain into a first semi-final berth since 1981, per Kevin Mitchell of the Guardian. The nation now has to be a favourite after dispatching the French.
Belgium continue to surprise and completely overwhelmed Canada, while Argentina made short work of Serbia. But Murray and James Ward are a skilled pair who will take some beating.
Hewett and Australia will certainly need more than just stubborn resolve when they face the British in September.
