Michael Jordan Autographed Bulls Rookie Card Sells for Record $2.7M, Graded PSA 9
An autographed 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie trading card sold for a record $2.7 million at private auction, Goldin Auctions announced Tuesday.
The card had received a PSA 9, while the signature was given an Auto 10 rating, according to Goldin.
The sale marks the highest price ever fetched by a trading card with a signature added after its release, according to Goldin.
The auction also broke the record for the highest price fetched by any Jordan rookie card. The previous standard of $2.5 million was set during a June sale of a 1986-87 Fleer rookie card by JOOPITER, an auction platform founded by Pharrell Williams. That card was also graded as a PSA 9 with an Auto 10 signature.
Cllct's Ben Burrows reported that both the card auctioned by Goldin and the card sold by JOOPITER were autgraphed by Jordan at the same private signing in early 2024.
The signing was first reported in April 2024 by cllct's Darren Rovell, who wrote that the signing took place in Florida with Jordan and a collector who had "at last six PSA 10s worth $180,000 each."
The reportedly collector brought the cards out of their cases to be signed by Jordan with a PSA representative present to grade the results, according to Rovell.
Six cards received Gem Mint 10 ratings after they were sealed and re-graded, per Burrows. The collector is hoping to sell those with 10 grades on both card and signature for $20 million each, Burros reported.
The record price for a sports card sold at auction currently stands at $12.932 million. That was the price fetched by a 1-of-1 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection card featuring autographs from Jordan and Kobe Bryant during a Heritage Auctions sale in August.
