Fans Troll PSU for Loss vs. Iowa in 1st Game After James Franklin Fired, Allar Injury

Julia StumbaughOct 18, 2025

Penn State fans are missing Drew Allar already.

PSU lost 25-24 at Iowa on Saturday night in the Nittany Lions' first game since firing former head coach James Franklin and losing Allar to a season-ending injury.

Fans questioned whether Penn State will be able to remain competitive this season without its starting quarterback.

Viewers also trolled Penn State for being unable to get back in the win column after parting ways with Franklin.

Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, who had taken just 39 college snaps heading into Saturday's game, went 15-for-28 with 93 passing yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss.

After Zakee Wheatley pulled down an opening-drive interception, Kaytron Allen started out the game with a rushing touchdown for Penn State.

Grunkemeyer struggled in the second quarter as he threw interceptions on back-to-back drives.

Allen helped Penn State stay in the game with another rushing touchdown in the third quarter.

The Nittany Lions pulled ahead by five points with less than five minutes remaining on the clock after Grunkemeyer led his team on a late field goal drive.

But the PSU defense was unable to come up with a stop as Kaden Wetjen ran in a go-ahead touchdown in the next minute of play.

Penn State's final drive ended with a stifled Nicholas Singleton run and an incomplete pass from Grunkemeyer.

Allar, who recently underwent surgery on a broken left ankle, has likely played his final college snap given the upcoming expiration of his NCAA eligibility.

Franklin, meanwhile, is gone after coaching Penn State to 10 bowl games and a College Football Playoff appearance in his 12 years with the program.

Interim coach Terry Smith has a major challenge ahead of him with an away game at No. 1 Ohio State next on the schedule.

After four straight losses and the loss of their star quarterback, the Nittany Lions will likely need to see a huge step forward from Grunkemeyer or a career game from Allen in order to contend with the defending national champions next Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
