Florida's Billy Napier Reacts to Being Booed by Fans After Win vs. Mississippi State

Paul KasabianOct 18, 2025

Florida football head coach Billy Napier, who is squarely on the hot seat, was booed at home on Saturday even after the Gators defeated Mississippi State 23-21.

After the game, Napier was asked about the crowd reaction as well as his future.

Napier signed a seven-year, $51.8 million deal with Florida in 2021 after excelling for four seasons with Louisiana (40-12 record). However, it hasn't worked out with the Gators, as they've gone just 22-23 in Napier's three-plus seasons. This year's team is 3-4 overall with a 2-2 SEC record.

The Gators nearly lost against Mississippi State, which found itself with 1st-and-10 on the Florida 29-yard line with 29 seconds remaining. However, Bulldogs quarterback Blake Shapen threw an interception to Florida defensive tackle Michai Boireau with no one else in the immediate area, effectively ending the game.

The Bulldogs were big 9.5-point underdogs to Florida going into the matchup, per DraftKings Sportsbook, so Gators fans probably didn't feel great about a two-point win given how the Napier era has gone, coupled with the fact that they were victorious after basically being gifted a turnover.

Ultimately, Napier's time in Gainesville could be ending soon. Reports have been prevalent on his future of late, including this one from Matt Hayes and Dan Rorabaugh of the USA Today Sports Network.

"Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin met with a handful of influential boosters Tuesday, and was told continuing financial support depends on new direction within the football program, three people with direct knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports. The people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect the ongoing process, said embattled Florida coach Billy Napier could be fired as soon as this weekend. One thing is certain: Napier won't survive another loss."

Florida's upcoming schedule is not easy, with the Gators facing rival No. 9 Georgia, who just beat No. 5 Ole Miss, on Nov. 1 after a bye week. The Gators then travel to Kentucky before visiting Ole Miss and hosting No. 11 Tennessee. A home game against in-state rival Florida State ends the season.

If Napier's Florida tenure ends shortly, then it wouldn't be a surprise to see him land another head coaching gig at a lower-level Division I-FBS school, especially given how well he piloted Louisiana, which landed 15th in the 2020 Associated Press poll and 16th in the 2021 AP poll under his watch.
