Bill Belichick, UNC Canceled Series Reportedly to Be Released as Movie After Season

The docuseries following legendary head football coach Bill Belichick's first season at the University of North Carolina is reportedly getting transformed into a singular documentary.

Speaking Friday on his Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast (beginning at the 7:23 mark), sports journalist Pablo Torre said North Carolina didn't want the documentary to be episodic in nature, so it will instead be released as a film at the conclusion of the 2025 season.

Earlier this month, Jeremiah Holloway of On3.com reported that the Belichick docuseries was "no longer happening," but People's Sean Neumann and Natasha Dye later reported that it was still in the works despite Hulu leaving the project.

Torre confirmed that filming is still taking place, although the end result looks like it will be different than originally intended.

Regarding why Hulu abandoned the project, a source indicated to Neumann and Dye that the platform had a different concept for the series than UNC did, saying:

"Hulu wanted Keeping Up with the Belichicks, but that was never for sale. Their vision ultimately wasn't in alignment with the university's.

"The contracts between UNC and Everwonder are still in place and are valid. There will be a documentary, Hulu is just no longer involved in production or distribution."

Since parting ways with the New England Patriots at the end of the 2023 season after six Super Bowl titles and 266 regular-season wins together, Belichick has arguably made more headlines for what he has done off the field than on the sidelines.

Central to that is the 73-year-old coach's 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson, who is almost always seen by Belichick's side.

Their relationship has stirred up some controversy not only because of the age gap, but also due to the perception that Hudson perhaps has too much influence over Belichick.

Back in April, Belichick participated in an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning to promote his book, and when Belichick was asked how they met, Hudson chimed in from the background, saying, "We're not talking about this."

In a statement released through UNC, Belichick called it a "false narrative" that Hudson was trying to control the interview.

It was later reported by sports journalist Pablo Torre (h/t ESPN's David Hale) that Hudson was banned from UNC facilities, but the school denied it was true.

Given the unique dynamic between Belichick and Hudson, it is perhaps understandable if Hulu primarily wanted to focus on that, although that apparently wasn't what UNC wanted.

Instead, it sounds as though the documentary will primarily be about Belichick and the football program, which is off to an uneven start so far this season.

At 2-3, the Tar Heels are largely scuffling and losers of two straight games. That alone could make for a compelling documentary, as could the team turning things around over the course of the season if that turns out to be the case.
