Curt Cignetti's Updated Buyout, What He'd Owe Indiana if He Leaves After New Contract

Zach BacharOct 16, 2025

Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti's contract buyout was revealed after recently agreeing to an extension.

According to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg, the $93.25 million on Cignetti's deal is fully guaranteed if he gets fired by the school without cause.

NBC Sports' Nicole Auerbach also reported that the head coach would owe Indiana $15 million if he were to leave voluntarily.

On Thursday, Cignetti and the Hoosiers announced an agreement on an eight-year extension.

The new contract came with an average annual salary raise to $11.6 million, the third-highest among all college head coaches in 2025 (via Chris Vannini of The Athletic).

"I couldn't be more proud to be a Hoosier, and I plan on retiring as a Hoosier," Cignetti said in a video after the extension was announced. "The way that this state has embraced us and our success in football has meant more to me than anything else."

There were rumors that Cignetti could draw interest from Penn State after the Nittany Lions fired head coach James Franklin on Sunday, but the new extension will keep him with the Hoosiers.

Indiana's hefty financial commitment to Cignetti is understandable, as he's quickly turned the school's football program into a Big Ten contender.

After the Hoosiers compiled a 9-27 record in three years prior to the coach's arrival, they own a 17-2 record with him patrolling the sidelines. This includes a 6-0 start to the 2025 season, sitting at No. 3 in the latest AP Top 25 poll.

Indiana has excelled on both sides of the ball this year, ranking No. 2 in both scoring offense and scoring defense among all Big Ten schools through six games.

The Hoosiers will look to stay unbeaten in a matchup with Michigan State on Saturday.
