Yankees' Anthony Volpe Had Surgery on Shoulder Injury After MLB Playoff Exit
After a disappointing 2025 season, New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe is using his time off to get right.
According to Joel Sherman and Greg Joyce of the New York Post, Volpe underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder after the Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs by the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS.
A source told Sherman and Joyce that the "typical recovery" for this type of procedure would allow Volpe to be ready for the start of the 2026 season, but they added that his return timetable would be "based on the progress of recovery."

Sherman and Joyce noted that Volpe injured his non-throwing shoulder all the way back on May 3 when he made a diving attempt at a ground ball in a 3-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. He said at the time that he felt a "pop" in his shoulder, though it didn't cause him to miss much time, as he appeared in 153 games this year. Last month, it was revealed that he received multiple cortisone shots to allow him to continue playing.
While Volpe's toughness in playing through his injury is respected, his play certainly suffered as he was ailing. He hit just .212 this season with 19 home runs and 72 RBI. The 2023 Gold Glove winner's defense suffered mightily, as he appeared to be a liability in the field multiple times throughout the year.
The playoffs weren't any kinder to Volpe, as he hit just .192 in seven games before the Yankees were eliminated. His hesitance at the plate drew the ire of New York fans time and time again.
At 24 years old, Volpe is believed to be a key member of the Yankees' young core, but he will need a strong bounce-back year in 2026 to avoid fans turning on him even further. Any continued struggles could spell the end of his time in Pinstripes.
