Pete Alonso Reportedly Eyes 7-Year Contract in MLB Free Agency amid Mets Rumors

Julia StumbaughOct 11, 2025

Pete Alonso is expected to seek at least seven years on his next contract after batting a career-high .272 for the New York Mets in 2025, Mike Puma reported Saturday for the New York Post.

Alonso has previously said he plans to opt out of his $24 million player option with the Mets for the 2026 season.

The first baseman is now expected to test free agency after hitting 38 home runs and an NL-high 41 doubles while playing all 162 games of his seventh season with the Mets.

Alonso reportedly declined a seven-year, $158 million extension offer from the Mets in 2023 only to post a career-low .217 in his contract year.

He agreed to a one-year, $20.5 million deal in 2024, then reportedly sought another long-term extension after the season.

The Mets limited his options by making a qualifying offer, which meant any rival club would have to be willing to part with draft compensation in order to make an offer to the slugger ahead of the 2025 season.

Alonso ultimately agreed to return to Queens in 2025 on a two-year, $54 million deal

The contract reportedly featured $30 million in frontloaded salary for the 2025 season as well as the player option for 2026.

Alonso is now ineligible for another qualifying offer, which will make him a more appealing free agent this offseason.

Despite his strong 2025 campaign, however, a seven-year term would be a difficult ask for Alonso given that the contract would run from his age-31 season in 2026 to his age-37 season in 2032.

Alonso indicated when speaking to reporters on Sept. 28, after the shutout loss to the Miami Marlins that ended both the Mets' regular season and postseason hopes, that he would consider returning to Queens on a new contract.

"Nothing is guaranteed, but we'll see what happens," Alonso said in September, per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. "I've loved being a Met. Hopefully, they've appreciated me the same."

Alonso has played all 1,008 regular-season games and 16 postseason games of his MLB career for the Mets since the franchise drafted him in 2016. Whether he returns for an eighth season with the club could depend on what kind of term other suitors offer him in free agency.
